Songwriting: Notes: In putting the band together I knew I needed a bass player who coud cover the changes, had the spirit to takes some chances but also keep the whole thing grounded. I was in Europe at the tiem and had gone to the Salfelden Jazz festival in Austria where I had a conversation with Vernon Reid. After following up on his recommendation, I did some playing with German bass player, Wietn Wito, and the basis of the new band had formed. Wito came up with the bass parts for "The Ballad for the Romantic Desperado" and "Escape form Z-Nite". Claud Nobs heard a demo tape of some of tunes we were working on and invited us to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival. So we planned to play at the festival and then record the album back in New York. I had originally intended to do this album with Kenny Werner on keys but, due to circumstances, he couldn't come to Europe and sent his friend Richard Martinez to play the festival. Richard tuned into what i wanted immediately and I ended up recording the album with him. Tom Brechtlein, who joined the band after I came back to New York, was unsurpassed in his intuitive understandings of the musical concept. We rehersed for two days and went into the studio. All the tracks were done live and were completed in three days and on the fourth, Wito and I went in to touch a couple of technical things. Paul Wyckliffe was perfect for the recording and did a great job finding the right overall sound and mix. Artist Alliance
